The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation was established in 2002 to award grants to a broad spectrum of charities, including those that benefit spinal cord injury efforts. Today, with assets of approximately $500 million, the Foundation is primarily dedicated to funding extensive research, education and quality of life programs for improving the lives of people affected by spinal cord injury.
Having established ourselves as a major partner in the spinal cord injury field, the Foundation’s primary framework for decision-making is our Vision, Mission and Values. Our vision is a statement of what is possible, the picture of the future we want to create. Our mission speaks to the primary purpose for the organization’s existence. Our values define how we will achieve our mission and provide structure for decision-making. These statements not only provide the context for our strategic plan, but provide a guide for the staff to help align their activities with the visionary expectations of the Board of Directors.
Individuals with spinal cord injuries, and those who care for them, live full and productive lives as active participants in their communities.
Craig H. Neilsen Foundation’s funding is dedicated to supporting both programs and scientific research to improve the quality of life for those affected by and living with spinal cord injury.
Our values are inspired by our Founder, Craig Neilsen, who overcame barriers during his lifetime, empowered others to do the same, and created this organization to impact the field today and expand solutions for tomorrow.

“My dad was the epitome of tireless perseverance,” says Ray Neilsen, Chairman of the Board. “His injury gave him laser-focus, and he became even more successful after the accident. My dad never saw himself as disabled, because although his body was damaged, in his mind, he was a triathlete.” Craig’s personal experiences ignited a passion to support the spinal cord injury field. As the vision for the Foundation evolved, he realized the tremendous impact the Foundation could have to improve the lives of others.
Mr. Neilsen was a prominent real estate developer who founded the casino gaming company Ameristar Casinos, Inc. “He was an entrepreneur with incredible vision who took his company public and who led its strong growth,” Ray adds. Ameristar’s initial market capitalization was $27 million – thirteen years later, at the time of Mr. Neilsen’s death, the market capitalization was $1.4 billion. “Further, my dad inspired all of us with the courage, determination and dignity that he demonstrated every day in living with a spinal cord injury,” says Ray.
Craig Neilsen wanted his Foundation to contribute in a significant way to spinal cord injury research and education and to offer those affected by spinal cord injury the quality of life they deserve. In his own words, Craig inspired us by saying, “You have to find your inspiration for going on. For some it’s seeing someone worse off and thinking, well, it could be worse - at least I didn’t die. For others it’s hearing the voice of someone you love, promising to remain by your side. In my case, I got mad, and I think that helped me. Nobody cuts you any slack, and the fact that you just about killed yourself is no reason for any accommodation. I was forced to get active and get some things accomplished, because I had my family depending on me. It was not the easiest thing to do. You can decide that you don’t want to live your life, and a lot of people do that. But I think most people - when push comes to shove - take their hard knocks and then pick up the pieces and go on.”
His dedication to improve the lives of those affected by spinal cord injury and to support scientific exploration for effective therapies and treatments leading to a cure still guide the Foundation’s work today.
“Though my dad’s lifestyle had been altered considerably, his ambition was unchanged,” Ray remembers. “For the next two decades, Craig’s vision, entrepreneurial spirit and inexhaustible passion helped him lead his companies to immeasurable successes.”

Upon Craig H. Neilsen’s passing in 2006, Ray H. Neilsen and Gordon R. Kanofsky were appointed as Co-Trustees of the charitable trust under which the Foundation was formed. Together, they oversee the administration of the trust estate, its investments and management of the Foundation.
The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Board of Directors is comprised of respected leaders in business, academia, science and medicine. Their expertise and commitment help govern the Foundation in its work to significantly and positively impact the spinal cord injury field. This group of dedicated individuals guides the organization by keeping the vision and values of our Founder at the forefront, setting strategic priorities and overseeing fiscal decisions.
Over a decade after the Foundation was first established by Craig H. Neilsen, the Board of Directors continues to work in support of the same mission: “To improve the quality of life for those living with spinal cord injury and to support scientific exploration for effective therapies and treatments leading to a cure.”
To support the mission of the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, the committed staff oversees and implements the organization’s daily activities and ensures the Foundation successfully meets its strategic goals. This team of experienced professionals, in collaboration with leading SCI experts and other community partners, works together to carry out a wide variety of key operational, financial and grantmaking responsibilities.
In addition to the team working out of the national office in Southern California, Foundation staff members are located in satellite offices in Colorado, Idaho, Maryland, Utah and Virginia.
The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation’s grantmaking decisions are guided by rigorous peer-review. The Foundation recruits leading researchers, clinicians and other community advocates to serve on its various Review Boards. Representing a wide range of expertise in the SCI field, Review Board members are actively involved in the grant review process; they advise the Neilsen Foundation staff and Board of Directors on the merit of each proposal, submit funding recommendations and offer general guidance to the staff on optimization of grant application materials.
While the Foundation's Board of Directors determines the final funding outcome of all grant applications, Review Board members provide invaluable guidance and recommendations to support the mission of the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.
